1993

11/03/93 The Mauretania, Bristol

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

The debut show. After a few false starts and a lot of rehearsal 143 people crowded into a very small venue, approaches from EMI and London Records after the show. Also the first of many venues that closed down not too long after we play there.

23/03/93 The Louisiana, Bristol

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

Don't remember this one.

14/04/93 The Mauretania, Bristol

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

Or this one, after a period of dereliction The Mauretania is now a restaurant/bar.

10/05/93 Moles Club, Bath

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

The start of our weird relationship with Moles Club.

21/05/93 The Mauretania, Bristol

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

Don't remember this one either

09/06/93 The Louisiana, Bristol

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

I think this might be the one where we played on the bar, if so, there are photos somewhere, I shall look them up and get scanning.

20/06/93 The Fleece & Firkin, Bristol

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

Can't remember this, we must have been supporting somebody. Could have been some dreadful band who looked and sounded like The Clash. Oh that'll be the Manic Street Preachers then.

28/06/93 Moles Club, Bath

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

This may be the one where we smashed a monitor and they started to dislike us after this show.

01/07/93 Frankie's Nightspot, Gloucester

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

I remember this one. A late-night drinking club where nobody wanted to see a band disturbing their nice quiet evening. Faced with utter indifference and even contempt, we decided that if they didn't like us at least they wouldn't forget us. We played everything at full volume and as fast as possible. Despite the entrance only being a pound, some people demanded their money back "Worst band I ever did see". Art took a gun with him because he though Gloucester might get a bit rough. Art lived in Newport.

03/07/93 Jim's Cousin's Party, somewhere in Somerset

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

Played in a marquee in a field. The whole community was there and were disappointed that we couldn't do "C C Rider".

02/08/93 The Mean Fiddler, Harlesden, London

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

There are photos of this somewhere, definitely, a proper show in a proper venue and a couple of minibuses full of folks came with us.

06/10/93 The Thekla, Bristol

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

Supporting a solo Edwyn Collins and we became his backing band for a few songs at the end. One of the finest things I've ever done. There's even a video of this one.

19/11/93 The Jug of Ale, Birmingham

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

We played with a specially re-formed Mighty Mighty as we were recording for Hugh's (singer with MM) new label. The evening was overshadowed by the huge row they had afterwards when they all remembered why they had split up in the first place.

18/12/93 The George & Railway, Bristol

Jonny Collins, David W.Brown,Mark Langley, Jim Harvey, Art Challender

Billed as The Modesty Blaise Victorian Carol Evening, we confused everyone with a shameless rendition of Nat King Cole's "Christmas Song" and by renaming the venue The George & Reindeer. Nobody got the joke which, as you'll see, is a common problem. Another place that closed shortly after we played, the site is now awaiting redevelopment. support from Nial Joyce, later to be heard on Modern Guitars...
